The Boys Arrive!

Stay with us as we follow 2 French  and 2 New Zealand travellers 'leapfrogging' their way overland from Lyon to New Zealand via 12 countries using any means of travel possible and on a shoestring budget..

Visit their website www.LeapFrogVoyage.com where they have been posting their videos of cultural faux pas and language difficulties as they into each other's way of life and experience each other's countries as only a local could.

'Spending time with the Frogs in their own country is such a fantastic opportunity.  There is such a rich culture here, and in some ways completely different to ours, so it's nice to know exactly when you put your foot in it culture-wise.' - Benji Hall

'I'm just excited about finishing up on the complete opposite side of the world - a place as exotic and foreign as New Zealand.  But first, I can't wait to see how these little Kiwis appreciate all things French - especially the local Breton dance!' - Antoine Bourgin

Have a look at Week One of the Leap Frog Voyage and the boys' activities so far.

Spotlight on:

KENYA

Describing the wild in Kenya is not something that can be done in just one word. Many words come to mind, like ‘diverse, beautiful, humbling, expansive’ but the overall feeling of having no part in this massive orchestration of majestic wildlife in perfect co-existence speaks for itself.

The expansive landscape is breathtaking and seems never-ending but is only part of the picture. It is difficult to describe thousands of wildebeest migrating in a cloud of dust that roars through the valley or the lightning and thunder shows that strike the earth repeatedly as clouds roll fiercely through dark skies carrying floods of water and the smell of steaming soil. Kenya is indescribable and every bit worth experiencing

July - September The best time visit the Masai Mara in Kenya for the wildebeest migration.  The Masai Mara offers safaris to view game including the Big Five (Lion, African Elephant, African Rhinoceros, African Buffalo, Leopard).  Avoid this area from April - June as this is heavy rain season.

Surrounding the Masai Mara The Masai Mara borders on the Serengeti National Park which is in Tanzania and offers much the same in wildlife as the Masai Mara.  If you venture north east from the Masai Mara, you will find the Ngorongoro Crater.

'It is probably a bit passé to describe Ngorongoro Crater as a Garden of Eden, or the Shangri-La of wildlife, but both descriptions fit. Ngorongoro Crater is one of those exceptional natural places on earth where reality exceeds expectation. Vague images that had formed in my mind over many years of anticipation were instantly reframed and focused, upon my first view of the crater, from the top of the descent road. It turns out that my mental picture of the place had been a pale, monochromatic reproduction of this vibrant, colourful masterpiece.' ... More

Kenya's Towns Nairobi Kenya's capital which is a clean, seemingly first-world city which unfortunately boasts a criminal element that has created a bad name for itself.

Lamu An Arabic town on Lamu which is an island. 'Traditional Muslim locals, neo-hippies, and affluent adventurers... so laid back it's almost horizontal'.

Mombasa Mombasa is the second city at the coastal region and an island itself. It would not do justice to describe Mombasa on paper, one would need to see the white beaches, the sky blue warm waters, the warm temperatures, the coastal features both physical and historic and meet a community made lazy by nature.

Flying High -

Tip of the Month

You'll experience less jet-lag when you skip the airplane food! It's typically high in fat, salt & sugar & is low in carbs. To add to that, your swollen intestines (due to the low air pressure) make it hard to digest. Instead, drink loads of fluids (no, not the gin and tonics!) and take along some carbohydrate snacks.
